Wilhelm Heinse, ANASTASIA UND DAS SCHACHSPIEL/1803 Anastasia u nd d as Schachspiel [Anastasia and the Chess Game] Briefe aus Italien vom Verfasser des Ardinghello [ Wilhelm Heinse ] Two Volumes Bound in One Frankfurt am Main: Varrentrapp und Wenner, 1803, 231, 279 pp., text in German, 4.25" x 6.5", paper covered boards, paper spine label. Paper is peeled from boards in a couple of areas, edges rubbed, corners worn & rounded, surface scuffs, some writing on front pastedown and endpaper, some dark stains to pp. 26-37 of vol. 2, small thumbnail size stain in bottom margins of vol. 2 some pages, pages otherwise bright and clean. Johann Jakob Wilhelm Heinse (1749 - 1803) German author. Heinse implements a board position used by the famous Italian chess player, Giambattista Lolli, in this novel. I believe this is the author's last work and is somewhat scarce. "After attending the gymnasium at Schleusingen he studied law at Jena and Erfurt. In Erfurt he became acquainted with Wieland and through him with "Father" Gleim who in 1772 procured him the post of tutor in a family at Quedlinburg. In 1774 he went to Dusseldorf, w he assisted the poet JG Jacobi to edit the periodical Iris . the famous picture gallery inspired him with a passion for art, to the study of which he devoted himself with so much zeal and insight that Jacobi furnished
