Everett Shinn, (American, 1876-1953 is best known as a member of the Ash Can School of the Eight. He was a painter, illustrator, and a playwriter. In this painting, he captures the life of this scene with his unmistakable quick sketch style and unique realist approach. We see a moment of spontaneous action on a snow covered street in New York City. The carriage, the people seeming to fight the wind and the snow, huddling en masse to get where they are going.This painting is of mixed media, including watercolor, pastel and body white. It measures 15"x 22 3/4". It is matted framed in a silver wood and the overall size is 31 1/2" x 23 5/8". There is glass over the piece. It is signed in the lower left E. Shinn 1904.
