Maxim Water Chest Original zinc plated steel water chest for use with MG08 and MG08/15 water cooled machine guns, large threaded throat on one end and smaller threaded throat on the other, folding handle on top and folding ring on each end. Inside the handle recess on top is a stamped mfr marking-DEW?????/BERLIN N.O. 43. Complete marking is hard to read due to the repaint finish and hand painted letters "Gl." which are visible under the repaint (same "Gl." letters are also painted on the end with the large filler throat as well). Weight 5 pounds 8 ounces. Can was overpainted with a gold/gilt finish and is stencilled in black on one side SOUVENIR/AMERICAN VICTORY/ST. MIHIEL/SEPT. 12-16, 1918. Can was found in Oklahoma so I'm guessing that it was probably brought back by a Doughboy of the 90th Division (St Mihiel was the Division's first major action). Can is missing both the large and small filler caps (small one has been replaced but is not the original, however it has been on the can for a long time). Gilt repaint finish is obviously tarnished and worn from years of storage with some light surface rust in spots and several very small dents to the left edge of rim just above the handle. No holes rusted through, cracks, or other structural damage. Despite the missing caps, the can still displays well and would look great in any
