Very unusual flat hat or pancake hat, WWI vintage, wide top and adjustable string liner, faded somewhat to brownish blue. Bullion lettering reads "USS Kaiserin Auguste Victoria" and I am told it was for troop transport. Some wear to a few letters and some green stuff in them from age. Nice hat and a ship one might confuse with the enemy! Has cardbaord stiffener in the band to make it stand up, this of course just comes out. The hat has a machine stitched-on tally, and carries about 8 moth holes, none of them large, IE less than pencil size. Lining is bluish gray cotton, NOT denim, of the type seen on earlier hats.
