The History: The 2 nd Marine Division was activated on February 1, 1941 when the 2 nd Marine Brigade was redesignated. It was stationed in California , but included elements of the 6 th Regiment, which were stationed in Iceland . It moved to the South Pacific and entered combat on August 7, 1942 in the Solomon Islands . They deployed to Guadalcanal in mid September and saw heavy fighting there. They were given a rest in New Zealand and were joined by the Marines from Iceland . Their next combat came on November 20, 1943, when the division landed on Betio Island in the Tarawa Atoll. The 2 nd Marines suffered 3,500 casualties after the three days of bloody fighting on Betio ended.
