A Short History of Coins and Currency In Two Parts

THIS little book is founded on an Introductory Address which the author had the honour of delivering some years before, as first President of the Institute of Bankers. It was, however, almost rewritten one year before as a Lecture delivered at the London Institution. The second part is new. It deals with the weights of coins ; the standards adopted ; the means taken from time to time to secure a satisfactory currency ; and, the author regrets to add, those also perhaps even more numerous by which Kings and Parliaments have attempted to secure a temporary and dishonourable advantage, by debasing the standard and reducing the weight of the coins.
