THE want of some systematic arrangement of the coinage of the Ancient Britons bas long been felt, not only by collector's of coins, but by students of British history. It was with the view of supplying this want that the following work was commenced, and though at the outset and the author’s intention was only to give a list of such coins of this class as bad already been published, with references to the passages in the various works in which they bad been described or engraved, yet the author found that a mere index, such as he has proposed, would be of comparatively little use, and he therefore resolved to proceed on a more comprehensive plan. He found that the notices and engravings of the various ancient British coins were scattered through a considerable number of different volumes
