Albert Schoenhut, son of Frederick and grandson of Anton, both toymakers from Wurtemburg, Germany, was born on February 5, 1849, in Goeppengein, Germany. At age 17, he arrived in the United States to settle in Philadelphia. It was 1866 and right after the close of the Civil War. Albert did not enter the United States as an immigrant, cold and bewildered, but came under the aegis of Mr. Dahl, the buyer for the large store of Wanamakers & Sons.
