The noun primitive has a certain connotation accepted by historians and anthropologists, however among dealers and collectors of Americana and Canadiana, it has become a generic term used to describe many products of the past two centuries. I have chosen to use the word primitive to describe an article that has interest or significance because of its association with the development of our social history. Most of the artifacts in this book have the characteristics I ascribe to folk art, or are examples of my definition of primitives.
