Since few old American tools carry completion or patent dates, to learn something of their origins inspect imprinting or embossing with a magnifying glass (I once found a rough mallet with the owner's name his faint 'X' knifecut into the handle); note acknowledged regional and group typical styles (Pennsylvania Dutch, Zoar, Amish, Shaker, New England, Western, etc.); talk with the owners if possible; look for similars; and pursue whatever other evidence seems relevant.
