A hatpin was used to securely fasten a hat to the head of the wearer. Hatpins measuring from 4" to 12" in length, were worn from approximately 1850-1930. Because of the size of the hats and the hairstyles, it often required several of these functional pins to defy gravity and whip the whims of capricious winds.
