In the United States, the doll making industry of the 17th, 18th and early 19th century paralleled the development of other "arts" in America. That is, in the city individuals often had more time to have different individuals participate in specialized industries. Outside the city, more often than not, many of the people were engaged in making a living to the extent that the "arts" were part of the day to day culture.
