Ink containers have always been an important part of history - from the Middle Ages when they were made from horn and leather and known as inkhorns or inkpots - to the mid twentieth centuty when inkwells were made as souvenirs. Ink itself was a valuable substance and containers made to hold it usually had covers or small openings to prevent evaporation or contamination of the ink.
