Most glass or tumbler collectors will agree that the origin of this phenomenon can be traced to the jam, cheese, dairy, and food product glasses of the 1930s and 1940s; to soft-drink companies which printed their trade-marks and product designs on glasses, jars, and milk bottles to stimulate sales and to capture public awareness; and to newspaper comics such as Li 'I Abner, Popeye, and Dick Tracy. Manufacturers, hoping to increase the sa le and popularity of their products, offered limited edition character designs on the sides of their glass contain ers. In t ime, sets and series evolved, and because so many different colors and designs were availab le, collectors discovered the fun and chal lenge of putting together sets of their favorite glasses which could, after all, be used in the kitchen and dining room.
