Although non-electric toasters did exist before the early 1900s, the electric toaster evolved from Albert Marsh's invention of "the nickel-chromium alloy with contents being very low in electrical conductivity, very infusible, non-oxidizable to a very high degree, tough and sufficiently ductile to permit drawing or shaping it into a wire for use as an electrical resistance element," the alloy that would be used for heating elements in early electric toasters.
