The earliest traceable American-made, unbreakable composition doll was advertised in Butler Brothers catalog of 1899. Very little is known about the next ten years. It was not until 1909, when E. I. Horsman & Co. introduced Billiken, that American-made composition dolls gained in popularity. At the time, the trade was dominated by European imports of various types of dolls and centered in New York City. It followed that the new domestic dolls were offered for sale by the already established large importers and wholesalers such as George Borgfeldt & Co., E. I. Horsman & Co., and others. Smaller, new companies like Fleischaker & Baum (Effenbee, est. 1910) followed.
