Madame Beatrice Alexander was born on March 9, 1895, in New York City. Her father, Maurice Alexander, opened the first doll hospital in New York City. He sold new dolls and porcelain pieces, as well as repairing dolls. Thus Madame grew up around dolls and saw the joy they brought to children. She also saw the children's tears when they brought their broken dolls in to be repaired by her father. It is believed that the first doll Madame made was a Red Cross Nurse of cloth.
