The Madame Alexander Doll Company was formed in 1923 by Madame Beatrice Alexander and her husband, Phillip Behrman. Beatrice Alexander was born on March 9, 1895, in New York City. The first doll hospital in New York City was opened by her father, Maurice Alexander. He repaired dolls, and sold new dolls and fine porcelain pieces. Madame grew up seeing the joy that dolls brought to children. Madame's first dolls were made of cloth. Her very first doll is believed to be a Red Cross urse.
