The Madame Alexander Doll Company was formed in 1923 by Madame Beatrice Alexander and her husband, Phillip Behrman. Beatrice Alexander was born on March 9, 1895, in New York City. Her father, Maurice Alexander, owned the first doll hospital in New York City. He repaired dolls and sold new dolls and fine porcelain pieces. Madame grew up seeing the joy that dolls brought to children. Madame made her first dolls of cloth.
