The trade era in North America began in 1492, when Columbus and his men came ashore with items for exchange. The trading period in fact has lasted until the present, for even today native handicrafts and artworks are occasionally exchanged for goods, sometimes with the medium of cash. The height of Indian-White commerce, however, was the great fur trade period which lasted from approximately 1600 - 1900, extending a few years later in some regions.
