The Madame Alexander Doll Company was formed in 1923 by Madame Beatrice Alexander and her husband, Phillip Behrman in New York City. Madame's father Maurice Alexander owned the first doll hospital in New York City where he repaired dolls, and sold new ones and fine porcelain pieces. He was born in Russia, learned the doll business in Germany, and later immigrated to the United States where he met and married Madame's mother. Madame grew up seeing the love children had for their dolls and the despair when their dolls were damaged.
