The Alexander Doll Company began in 1923 when Madame Beatrice Alexander joined with her husband, Phillip Behrman, to form the company. Beatrice Alexander was born March 9, 1895, in Brooklyn, New York. Her father, Maurice Alexander, owned the first doll hospital in America. He repaired antiques and restored porcelain and bisque dolls. Young Beatrice often saw how upset children were when their favorite doll was broken. Some of Madame's earliest dolls were made of cloth which did not break when dropped.
