American Indian artifacts of whatever kind usually have certain general characteristics. The objects, large or small, are made of natural materials and are often carefu lly and skillfully crafted. Some artifacts are ornamental in themselves (like beads of many kinds), while others are objects (like pipes) that may be artistically rendered. Still other artifacts, like gorgets and pendants, may have incised markings that have never been solidly explained but may be ornamental or even ceremonial in nature.
