In 1959, the toy store shelves were graced with a new teenage fashion model doll named Barbie®. At first, she was met with apprehension but in the next few years she became a phenomenon. With her beautiful, tailored wardrobe and incredible accessories little girls would, of course, need cases to hold all of their Barbie® doll treasures. A new facet to chi ld's play would come in the form of licensed products bea ring the Barbie® doll name and it was also a great source of advertising for Mattel. T he first licensed products debuted in 1961 with a li ne-up that included cases, diaries, wallets, and autograph books to name a few. The introduction of licensed products also gave many companies besides Mattel, a boost in their sales and production. Such companies as Irwin Toys, Standard Plastic Products, and Susy Goose Toys, among others, were brought to the forefront of their respective industries.
