The United States Electric Lighting Company 1884 Circular

The arc system is admirably adapted for lighting large spaces where a brilliant general illumination is desired, and, if we consider merely the quantity of light produced, no other artificial light can compare with it in economy, while the series system of distribution ordinarily used with arc lamps admits of running the lights at a great distance from the generator with comparatively small conductors and with a high degree of economy.
