The advantages of studying the arts of a period collectively, thus enhancing the appreciation and understanding of each, was, I think, clearly demonstrated in the first volume, and becomes still more evident as the series proceeds. But while the trends and tendencies which the various arts have in common are more readily recognized through this collective approach, it is also brought home to us that there are marked contrasts and variations within the loosely-drawn confines of a dominant style, arising from class distinctions, different levels of culture and other social or economic causes.
