Ever increasing demand necessitated a standard nomenclature for early American pressed glass. It was a source of annoyance and expense both to collectors and dealers to find that different sect~ons of the country had different names for the same pattern. No collector could be certain that if he ordered Baltimore Pear from Ohio he would receive what Pennsylvania or Connecticut dealers knew by that name. But even more deplorable was the fact that many attractive patterns were virtually uncollectible by mail because they had no name at all. Descriptions and rubbings did not always prove successful in obtaining matched specimens for the amateur who wanted to complete a set of the pattern of which the trade name had been lost and no substitute agreed upon.
