4x6 b/w postwar photo signed by WW2 German Bomber Knights Cross winner Heinrich Schmetz . Schmetz originally flew He111's and Ju-88's in KG-4. During a night attack on Piraeus harbor at Gibralter, he scored a direct hit on the British ammunition ship Clan Frazier and the resulting explosion sank 11 ships and devastated the port. He later commanded KG-100 and worked with Werner v. Braun testing radio-controlled X-1 rockets, the first effective guided munitions. In 1943, flying a Do217, Schmetz used the guided rockets to sink the British battleship Warspite and the Italian battleship Roma. For these actions he was awarded his RK. Great early posed photo of Schmetz in dress uniform wearing his awards. Signed nicely in black marker. All signatures guaranteed original.
