-10 db Inline Mic Pad. I bought a few inline XLR mic pads on the market for $20 plus and realized a few things. Problem 1. I found that all of the pads around $20 are unbalanced and provide different resistances to pin 2 and pin 3 on an XLR connector. This is not a good thing. This will cause phase issues at the output. Problem 2. All of them are built into "tubes". When you plug them in, the produce strain on the opposite connector. Leave them there too long and it can warp the opposite connector or even break a pin if pressure is put on them. They are awkward and frankly, over priced. I hand build these -10 db pads for one reason. I found that in my tight room, my snare and tom close mics kill the input of my pre's. A 10 db balanced attenuation is perfect for what I am dealing with. It doesn't screw with the SNR because it is such a low value pad, and it gets the signal right into a workable range. I also build these pads into short jumpers instead of tubes. They look like a 1' mic cable so they do not cause pressure on sockets like the usual pads. They are virtually unnoticeable. The big thing. These pads are a properly balanced . I have bought and gone over several inline pads ranging from $20 to $35 and found that they all use a cheap circuit that leaves your signal phase compromised at the output. Granted, you can read more
