Up for auction is the official award given by the RADIO HALL OF FAME to legendary comedian Groucho Marx. In 1988, the first year of the Radio Hall of Fame’s existence, Marx was inducted for his role hosting the radio version of YOU BET YOUR LIFE from 1947 to 1956. Groucho died in 1977, but the award representing this achievement was evidently given to his son, Arthur Marx, as this was discovered and purchased at his estate sale in May of 2010.The physical award is an old-time wood-paneled radio perched on a black beveled-edge base. It weighs about three pounds and is about 10” high and 7” wide. On the front of the base is a gold plaque, upon which is engraved “RADIO HALL OF FAME – 1988 / GROUCHO MARX / QUIZ SHOWS – “YOU BET YOUR LIFE”. The award is in mint condition, having rested on a shelf at Arthur Marx’s home for the past 22 years. The Radio Hall of Fame inducts several members a year; 2009 inductees included Wendy Williams, Neal Boortz and Doctor Demento. Past inductees include everyone from Gene Autry to Vin Scully to Bing Crosby. Also inducted in 1988, the inaugural year, along with Groucho were Fred Allen, Benny Goodman, Edward R. Murrow, and Orson Welles. A full list of members can be seen : /inducteesaz.html. The awards given out today at the ceremony are different than those awarded in 1988.
