2.25 Pound Lot of Silicated Crysocolla "Opalina" Cabbing Rough This chrysocolla opalite or "opalina" rough parcel weighs 1023 grams or 2.25 pounds. Chrysocolla opalite is a hard, durable blue cabochon material that comes from the Andes mountains of central Peru. It has a moh's hardness of 6.5+ and cuts more like agate than opal. The color is very stable and does not fade. We sent samples of this material to the leading gemological lab in the USA and we were told that it is chrysocolla mixed with more than one type of silica--a mix of chalcedony and opal. Similar material of other colors has been found throughout the western United States and was often referred to as "opalite" in the field collecting guide books. The miners in Peru refer to the material as "opalina" This material was mined in the early 2000's and we have not seen much of it available in the past few years. We were able to purchase most of the mine production of this material and will continue to provide this wonderful material to gem cutters, jewelers and gemstone enthusiasts.
