This is a set of 12 very large (33 by 30 inches) genuine antique Irish linen damask dinner napkins. The pattern is rich, detailed and very beautiful - large and unusual ferns and florals: poppies, pinks, primroses - a big border with a large central spray. The initials ESS are neatly written in a very old fashioned hand at one end of each napkin in small lettering . I think these date from the first half of the nineteenth century for the reasons given below: i.e. from the 1830s or 40s, a rare survival. I would be happy to use them, but you should note that they do have this damage and they are not perfect. Although they belonged to a wealthy family, it is clear that they were much treasured over many years. I haven't laundered these, since they were so smooth and beautiful. But there are a few faint brownish marks here and there. A modern mild stain remover would probably help any residual marks to fade - I've washed several tablecloths from the same lot of linens very successfully - and when the darns are carefully pressed, I think they are acceptable. A few weeks ago, I bought these as part of an absolutely stunning collection of antique linens - mostly Irish or Scottish linen damask - at auction, here in the West of Scotland.
