A wonderful bright red wool cap in a period style that will be familiar to Civil War enthusiasts who enjoy browsing camp scene group photos such as those seen in Millers Photographic History of the Civil War . This example remains in excellent all original condition with no fading and only a bit of mothing as good evidence of age and originality. The piece retains it's original tassel and demonstrated all the characteristics of hand and machine stitched construction and material that knowledgeable collectors look for. It's white polished cotton lining remains intact and it's hand stitched 2 5/8" wide cotton sweatband retains the bold unquestionably period stenciled identification of William Dennis - Co. A - 13th Reg't.- N.Y. Vol. . William Dennis was 21 years old when he enlisted on July 1, 1864 and mustered in as a Private in the 13th New York Heavy Artillery. Pvt. Dennis mustered out on June 28, 1865. ( It should be noted that per National Archives micro film # M551 roll #35 Dennis was mustered as a member of Co. K thus must have transferred to A subsequent to his initial enlistment.)
