1557 STRADA CHRONICLE with 483 WOODCUTS of COINS NUMISMATICS. Excellent portrait medallions in black!! Strada, Jacob de Epitome thesauri antiquitatum, hoc est, impp. rom. orientalium et occidentalium iconum, ex antiquis numismatibus quam fidelisime deliniatarum. Zürich: Andreas Gessner 1557. 36 unnumbered pages, 335 pages, 1 page. COMPLETE. 12,5 x 20 cms. Illustrated with 483 woodcuts of COINS (390 with portraits). Woodcut vignette to tile and woodcut initials. Fine original blindstamped pigsking over boards. References: VD16 S 9364; Adams page 1917. FIRST ZURICH EDITION and second Latin edition of Strada's important work first published in Lyon, 1553, with a French edition appearing only a month later. Gesner published a German translation in 1558 and a magnificent folio edition with new cuts in 1559. In the present edition the excellent portrait medallion woodcuts of white design on black ground are retained in their original size and make a very strong impression because of the reduced format of the book from 4to to 8vo.
