A small, full-page engraving (with text on verso) from the Christopher Plantin press in Antwerp, published in 1583. Subject: Jesus tempted by the Devil. (45) Details are typical of Flemish art of the time. from the design of: not given Engraver: Johannes Wierix Leaf: 8 .25 inch x 5.25 inch Condition: image is Very Good with small stains at the bottom left; water stains and some soiling in margins -- the leaf is somewhat more yellow than it appears below Scanner Issues: Image below lacks subtlety and clarity of the original, and distorts brightness, contrasts, and tonality. This is an or iginal, antique, copper-plate engraving published in 1583 (and printed earlier). It is from a work called Humanae salutis monumeta by Benedictus Montanus (Benito Arias Montano -- 1527-1598). Arias Montanus was born in Fregenal de la Sierra in Extremadura in Spain. He attended universities in Seville and Alcala and then became a priest in the Military Order of St. James. In 1562 he attended the Council of Trent with the Bishop of Segovia. Later he became the editor of the famous Polyglot (Multilingual) Bible published by the important Catholic Counter-Reformation publisher, Christopher Plantin, in Antwerp. read more
