1606 Map of Virginia and Florida by Jodocus Hondius One of the most famous early 17th Century maps of the North American continent. This map is from the estate of Daniel R. Childs, who was a prominent art collector from Darien, Connecticut. Mr. Childs was a trustee of the Whitney Museum of American Art from 1975 to 1980. I guarantee this map to be an original copperplate engraving from the 17th century. The last two images show the map removed from its frame. The overall size of the paper, including the sections folded-over on the back, is 19 x 22 3/8 inches. Map is of the southeastern part of North America by Jodocus Hondius, first published in Amsterdam in 1606. Area depicted ranges from the "Chesepiook Sinus", i.e. Chesapeake Bay, in Virginia to St. Augustine, Florida. Small illustrations of American Indians, local wildlife, ships, and sea creatures decorate the map at various places. Two depictions of Indian villages are included in the title cartouche. St. Augustine is shown at the bottom of the map, near a read more
