Jacques Gaffarel first published the work in 1629 in France where it was extremely popular; Edmund Chilmead produced the first english version in 1650. The preface to the edition states 'This Curious Booke was printed Thrice, with the space of Sixe Moneths: Twice in Paris; and Once, in some other City of France not named in the Impression. And it is suspected, and upon very good Grounds too, that the Booke-sellers of Rouen, in hope of Gaine, printed it more than Once; though not without very great Corruption, both of the Sense and Stile.' A strange and emotion-inspiring book from its inception, Unheard of Curiosities has never stopped being controversial to this day, and has been reprinted in facsimile recently in both 1993 and 1999.
