[6pp of text], with a total of 44 engraved plates: including frontispiece, plates numbered 2-34, another misnumbered 34, 1 unnumbered plate, and plates numbered 37-44. A rare work of engraved architecture - produced in various different editions, with different imprints. This present edition includes the title page of Wing B901, with the imprint: London : Printed for William Sherwin, and are to be sold at his shop next dore to the Star in Little Britain. And by Rowland Reynolds at the Sun and Bible in Postern-street near Moor-gate, M DC LX IX. [1669], but with an overslip reading: Printed for Dorman Newman at the Kings-Arms in the Poultry, and at the Ship and Anchor at the Bridge-foot on Southwark-side -1675 - which is unrecorded on ESTC. It conforms to the collation of Wing B901A, [6], 44 plates. Contemporary speckled calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Some wear and loss to boards, spine, cracking to joints, bumping to corners. Lettering-piece rubbed. Early ink inscription to verso of FFEP. Some marking, soiling and creasing to plates. Tear to plate 21, touching image but without loss, final plate torn at gutter margin, not touching image.. Some worming to fore-edge margin throughout, mostly marginal, but occasionally touching image. Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola (1507-1573), Italian Architect and leading proponent of Mannerism and Baroque. With Serlion and Palladio, Vignola was part of a triumvirate who were responsible for the spread of the Italian renaissance Architectural style throughout Europe during the sixteenth-century. His two greatest building designs were the Villa Giulia, built for Pope Julius III in Rome 1550-53 with the guidance of Michaelangelo, and the Chiesa del Gesù, the mother church of the Jesuit Order and one of the most influential structures for the Baroque movement. An English translation of the original Italian Regola delli cinque ordini d’architecturra (Rome, 1562), which canonized the use of five classical orders of Columns (Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite) to specific proportions using Vignola's own measurements of Roman monuments. This English translation highlights the work of Michaelanglelo, who had worked with Vignola on several projects , leaving him to designs with which finish his work on St Peter's Basilica in Rome, contained within; who was by the late Seveteenth-Century one of the most celebrated artists across Europe.
