Complete transcription to modern Portuguese executed by a professional paleographer provided with the lot: Official 17 th century manuscript copy âe" Royal letter concerning Liberty of Indians & creation of villages of free Indians. (dated 1696) Official 17 th century manuscript copy of a letter (dated 19 February 1696) from king Peter II of Portugal (1648-1697) to João de Lencastre (1646-1707), general governor of Brazil. The letter is entitled âeoe Regimento para o Governador do Estado do Brasil sobre a liberdade dos Indiosâe , in English âeoe Norm to the governor of Brazil concerning the liberty of the Indians.âe The king discusses the new freedom of former slave Indians and the consequent discontentment of the residents of S. Paulo and of the district of Maranhão. To address the problem, the king orders the creation of villages of free Indians obligated to work, but in a regulated way. The letter gives fourteen regulations concerning the newly created villages. For instance rule number 2 states: âeoe for each village it will be erected a church and a house for a priest so that the Indians could be spiritual led as it happens in all other free villages.
