VERY LARGE COLUMMELLA BEADS Hiwassee island tn 17 beads each measuring about 1 inch diameter The hiwassee river is one of the most beautiful places in north america, and was considered a sacred river by the cherokee. Hiwassee island is a well reknowned site that served as a processing center for the misssissippian marine shell trade, with a tremendous number of shell artifacts such as beads and gorgets and death masks being processed from marine whelk shells carried from the gulf coast. These beads are extremely well preserved and not chalky at all, and were excavated sometime around 1910 and are from the collection of Rocky Hall. Beads this size are extremely rare and I really hate to sell these as they are pretty much irreplacable. A great 100% authentic artifact. I pretty much only collect artifacts from Central KY and a few surrounding states like Tennesee and Indiana. Almost every artifact I offer for sale is a field find which by default means its from private land (people dont farm on public land...), legally obtained and Nagpra compliant (no graves or caves either). Amateur archeology is vitally important and a great deal has been contributed to the discipline by avocational archeologists (Webb, Funkhouser and Lilly were all avocational archeologists...) and private collectors are usually better curators of artifacts than museums or universities. I dont advocate or condone digging for the sole purpose of gathering artifacts, its sort of like ripping pages out of a library book just for the pictures. You might be able to buy buckets of authentic G10 6 inch long celts for 15 bucks where you live, but these are pretty rare everywhere else.
