I’ve been called worse: But a Punch & Judy Puppet Show without a bottler and a real professor using a swazzle , it isn’t an authentic Punch & Judy Show. Sorry. That’s just the way I roll. There are 17 pieces in this group, and only 3 of the pieces have damage. That’s amazing considering they were used by a child, and they are around 120 years old. The teapot has a chip; one of the saucers has a hairline; and the sugar bowl has “a thing.” Oh! And the waste bowl has some significant staining. WARNING: That “thing” that happened to the sugar bowl may frighten small children, so ask them to leave the room, please. I wouldn’t want you putting the law on me over this next picture. To a small, innocent child that may be as psychologically damaging as the first time they see Grandpa performing that old “pulling his thumb off” trick or “I got your nose.” As you can see, they are all old, authentic Allertons. You probably can’t see it, but the impressed crown is also on the marked pieces. The cups aren’t marked. I don’t think they ever were, but I could be off on that. I push enough dust aside to expose any flaws, but if I discovered it in some dusty attic, you can look forward to a little dust on it when it gets to your house. Let’s just sit quietly for a moment and contemplate that “thing” with the sugar bowl. The damage to the teapot is easy enough to explain. It’s a big chip, and that’s all there is to it. There are only two reasonable explanations for that “thing.” The first I’m sure you’ve already considered: The little girl had a pet mouse, and it lived in the creamer. But I have another theory. The little girl grew up, almost, but ran off with one of those trashy boys from over in Owen County before her 16th birthday and was the mother of three before she turned twenty. Her mother dedicated herself to the farm and to her husband Earl who worked hard but wasn’t really a farmer at heart. She read an article in “Tractor Monthly” about keeping your husband happy by surprising him with something new now and again. One of the suggestions was “Try Ikebana.” So she did. Earl was surprised, but Edna never really got her head around the concept of Zen and all that “simplicity stuff” the article talked about. (Like I said: It’s just a theory.)
