NICE 1700s Colonial British Square Poll Felling Axe Camp Axe - American Revolution - French & Indian War This is truly an incredible piece of history: Here's a gorgeous intact colonial square poll felling axe/camp axe, most likely used by British infantry troops in the 18th century in either the American Revolution or French & Indian War. This axe was dug near the site of one of the many military camps in the Lake George/Fort Edward, NY area, in a spot that once held a large blockhouse fortification. The area where the axe was found was used heavily between the 1750s and 1780s for mainly military purposes. The axe is stamped with an "MH" mark inside of a heart; anecdotally I have heard of similarly stamped relics found in the region that are generally attributed to British General John Burgoyne's pivotal 1777 Saratoga Campaign. As of yet though I have been unable to confirm this. For more on this type of axe, see Page 26 in George C. Neumann's Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution (scan included above). The axe measures 8.5 inches long, and is 2 inches wide at the socket. Weighs 3 lbs., 10 ounces. It is in restored condition, with some minor rust remaining in the deeper pits. This piece is museum worthy!!! You will not find a nicer colonial felling axe.***Please send Paypal payment within 24 hours. Thanks read more
