An original antique road map taken from the 1736 edition of Emanuel Bowen's "Britannia Depicta" . This popular pocket-sized publication, first printed in 1720, covered all of the principal roads of England and Wales for the horse and rider with every mile marked along the way and all of the landmarks noted - churches, houses, windmills, streams and uphill/downhill topography (downhills are identified by upside-down hills). Interesting notes about towns, such as market days, are added to the sides. Each strip has its own compass rose to help guide the traveller. This two-sided map starts in Chelmsford, Essex and runs south-east to Maldon. A new strip starts again in Chelmsford and runs south to Raleigh. A third strip follows the road runningsouth-west out of Chelmsford through Billericay and continuing on the reverse side to Gravesend. A new strip starts in Canterbury, Kent and travels east to Sandwich and Deal, continuing on to Dover. Good condition - minor tears to the edges. Attractive hand coloring.
