Mr. Henry Grove of Taunton London: Printed and Sold by James Waugh, at the Turk's Head in Gracechurch-street ~~1742-1747~~ ************************************** !! To See Our Facebook Photo Album of This Set with Over 100 Pictures, Including Closeups of Sermon Titles, Tailpieces, Signatures, Etc.... This is a rare set of books.... Currently we see only one odd volume for sale in the UK. No other set are available, and we've found no other sets in auction records. Henry Grove (1684-1738) was an English Presbyterian minister. Read this auction listing carefully! You won't find another set like it.... Octavos. Variously paginated. Volumes 2-10 of a 10 Volume Set. This set lacks Volume 1. Bound in original full leather with ribbed spines. Spines have a leather lettering piece with "Grove's Works" printed in gilt. Beneath the next panel is printed in gilt the Volume number. This is an ex-library set with shelf labels removed from the bottom of the spines (removed some time ago). There is a college bookplate on each pastedown for Wabash College bearing the logo "Scientiae et Virtuti". The bookplates appear to be early to mid 19th century. The college was founded in 1832, so this set could have been from the school' s original library. Volume II of the set has the handwritten number 2773 written in ink. There is some rubbing or cracking to the hinges, but overall this is a quite solid set. The books have early owners' signatures of Joseph Bayley (dated 1758) and P. Wingate (dated 1762). Henry Grove (1684-1738) was an English non-conformist minister, theologian, and teacher. He was born in Taunton, Somerset, and he was educated at a dissenting academy in Taunton. Only those who conformed to the Church of England in those days were allowed to study at English universities at Cambridge and Oxford. Quakers, Catholics, Jews and other Non-conformist Protestants had to study at dissenting academies. Grove was Presbyterian and some of the sermons in this collection are on Presbyterianism. The main sections of each Volume are as follows: Volume 2: London, 1747 Sermons and Discourses on the Following Subjects, viz: On the Errors and Imperfections of Christians On the Nature of Christ's Kingdom The Duty and Advantages of Secret Prayer Two Essays on Prayer On the Nature and Design of the Lord's Supper On the Obligation of the Professors of Christianity to celebrate the Lord's Supper Devotional Exercises relating to the Lord's Supper The Regulation of Diversions. Volume 3: London, 1747 Discourses on the Following Subjects, viz: On Saving Faith On the Soul's Immateriality On a Future State from Reason An Appendix to the Proofs of a Future State from Reason. Volume 4: London, 1747 Discourses, Tracts and Poems, on the Following Subjects, viz: Wisdom the first Spring of Action in the Deity A Charge delivered at the ordination of the Rev. Mr. Haskell A Charge delivered at the Ordination of the Rev. Mr. Harson Queries proposed to the consideration of all such as think it an Injury to Religion to shew the Reasonableness of it A Letter to the Rev. Mr. John Ball, of Honiton Four Essays, on Beneficence, Benevolence, Novelty, and the Human Soul Five Letters to the Author of the St. James Journal Poems on Several Occasions. Volume 5: London, 1745.
