1742 Cellarius Map - Sarmatia Christoph Keller (Cellarius) was an early believer in the power of maps to help sell books. His 'Geographia Antiqua' was so popular that its publication spanned three centuries from 1686 to 1812 and different maps were used for many editions. This map of Sarmatia (the region of the Black Sea, with present day Ukraine and the Caucasus) comes from a 1742 edition of that work. It names the ancient regions - Chersonesis Taurica, Cochis, Albania, Sarmatia Europa, Sarmatia Asiatica, Iberia - and many ancient towns and cities. The map measures 8" by 12" with a centrefold (as issued), has later outline hand colouring, and is good condition - the paper is slightly worn. The map is guaranteed to be over 260 years old.
