Please the search engine to the left to search specifically for maps, prints, Atlases on the Classical Images Stores, thank you Ville de Tranquebar, et Fort Danois de Dansbourg This finely engraved beautifully hand coloured original antique print a plan of the city & Portuguese fort of Tharangambadi (Tranquebar) in the Nagapattinam district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu , SE coast of India was published for Antoine-François Prevosts monumentus 20 volume edition of L`Histoire Generale des Voyages published by Pierre de Hondt, The Hag ue in 1747 -80. Tranquebar was founded by the Danish East India Company in 1620 when the main fort in Trankebar city, known as Fort Dansborg , was built by a Danish captain named Ove Gjedde as the residence of the governor and other officials for about 150 years (Ref: Tooley; M&B) Please note all items auctioned are genuine, we do not sell reproductions. During his term of office there he was commissioned to carry out major surveys, first of the coast of France and later of all the known coasts of the world. These tremendous undertakings resulted in the production of a very large number of sea charts of the highest quality, which appeared in many editions with varying numbers of charts to the end of the century. He was appointed Hydrographer to the King and was a member of the Royal society in London.
