! An Historical Review of the Transactions of Europe. In two volumes By Samuel Boyse 1747 - Reading - D. Henry 8" by 5", xxii, 183pp DETAILS An extremely scarce first edition of this significant and passionate historical study by a 1700s dissenting minister. 'From the commencement of the war with Spain in 1739, to the insurrection in Scotland in 1745. With the proceedings in parliament and the most remarkable domestick occurences during that period'. 'To which is added an impartial history of the late rebellion, interspersed with characters and memoirs, illustrated with notes, and adorned with maps, plans and heads'. With a portrait frontispiece of William, Duke of Cumberland. Volume II of two volumes. Samuel Boyse (1702/3?–1749) was a dissenting minister. He published many volumes of poetry in his life, and many translations, which were well-received, though he did not make any kind of fortune from them. The pattern of his entire literary life saw him squandering what little he had, and so being often obliged to pawn his clothes from time to time, but he was ingenious enough to invent a paper collar and cuffs to conceal his lack of a shirt in public. He took to drink, but managed to compile this Historical Review of the period 1739 to 1745 and an Impartial History of the Jacobite rising of 1745. DNB CONDITION In a full read more
