1760 Gibson Map - A Correct Chart of the Irish Sea, &c exhibiting a View of the several Islands & Bays, lately touch'd at by M. Thurot in his Attempt upon Ireland. John Gibson was a geographer, engraver and draughtsman who carried out his cartographic skills in Clerkenwell, London from 1750-92. Early on in his career he produced maps for the Gentleman's Magazine and this comes from a 1760 edition. The map shows the Irish Sea, situated between the east coast of Ireland and the west coasts of England, Wales and the southern part of Scotland. The map was used to illustrate the abortive attempt on Ireland by M. Thurot a year earlier. The map is in excellent condition, has later outline hand coloring and is engraved on heavy paper with three folds (as issued). T are two groups of rhumb lines, one with a fleur-de-lys and Gibson's name is engraved in the map's bottom right border. The map measures 7 X 9 inches (18 X 23 cm) with margins = or > 0.5 inch (1 cm). The small holes in the bottom margin are from binding strings and do not affect the map area. This is a genuine antique, NOT a reproduction and is guaranteed to be over 240 years old. ___________________________________ Shipping to the United States is $4.75US for regular airmail.
