Offered is CARTE DE LA MER MEDITERRANÉE EN DOUZE FEUILLES , dédiée à Mgr. le duc de Choiseul Colonel General des Suisses et Grisons. Ministre de la Guerre et de la Marine. Par son très humble Serviteur Joseph Roux Hydrographe du Roy. Marseilles: 1764. Chart VII, Minorca, Sardinia and Tunisia . Two folds as issued, 32" x 22-1/2"". The seventh chart of a rare set of 12 large engraved folding sea charts of the Mediterranean Sea, concentrating on the coastal regions of the Mediterranean and showing harbours and coastal towns, forts, castles, depths and anchorages. The charts are a cartographic record of the Mediterranean from the southern coast of Europe to the northern coast of Africa, and from the Straits of Gibraltar to the coast of Turkey. The place names are heavily corrupted since they are written the way they were pronounced by seamen. In addition to this chart, I am offering chart I Spain; chart IV Italy; & chart V Minorca, Sardinia and Tunisia The use of this set of French charts was known to be widespread - Nelson carried a copy on board HMS Victory at Trafalgar as late as 1802-1803. The offered chart has also been used for other voyages, as old pencil notations show. Notations are dated 1818 on this chart. I have included pictures showing these notes.
