Other plates Other Plates ."Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux " B iography of the Artist Born in Paris in 1725, Martinet was a French engraver and illustrator of books of birds . Martinet was trained first as engineer and illustrating natural-history books begun as secondary profession. But his talent as ornithological artist rapidly grew and engraving and illustrating natural-history books became his major profession. In 1756, he was working for the court of France as “Graveur du Cabinet du Roi”, making engravings after drawings by others. In the same period, Martinet also drew and engraved portraits and landscapes. Martinet is best known for his engravings of birds. He distinguished himself from other birds illustrators because he learned how to bring realism to his bird illustrations: earlier illustrators often depicted birds disproportionately and in unnatural poses. In the ‘700s ornithological books were produced primarily for the identification and classification of the birds. Martinet learned the importance of capturing the birds’ correct proportions and showing their natural habits and postures: his magnificent illustrations were mainly appreciated for their artistic value. Martinet contributed to the development of ornithology as a scientific discipline. We are pleased to offer a selection of prints from the superb work Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux (section of the Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière that is a massive, classic work in the history of the natural sciences of the world ), published in Paris from 1770 to 1786 by Georges Louis Leclerc, le comte de Buffon. The Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux was a monumental work based on the specimens of the French Royal Collection, the largest collections of birds in the world, with specimens of approximately 780 species, managed by G.L. Leclerc. The illustrations were (many) drew and (all) engraved by François Nicolas Martinet and consists in 1008 plates (973 of birds) depicting generally a single bird, within a gold or yellow frame, with bright and fine hand coloring.
