Martinet was trained first as engineer and illustrating natural-history books begun as secondary profession. But his talent as ornithological artist rapidly grew and engraving and illustrating natural-history books became his major profession. In 1756, he was working for the court of France as “Graveur du Cabinet du Roi”, making engravings after drawings by others. In the same period, Martinet also drew and engraved portraits and landscapes. Martinet is best known for his engravings of birds. He distinguished himself from other birds illustrators because he learned how to bring realism to his bird illustrations: earlier illustrators often depicted birds disproportionately and in unnatural poses. In the ‘700s ornithological books were produced primarily for the identification and classification of the birds.
